Science Fiction, Comedy and Action – amazing combination of all three. Kid Vs Kat Is a famous animated series of our time. You might have seen this show once in your childhood. And if I’m correct then this video will surely bring back all the faded memories of this show. Additionally, what happened in the first and last episodes of this series, we will come to know.

Also, the biggest question is why this show was discontinued just after airing 2 seasons. We will get to know about this now.

Kid Vs Kat – The First Episode

The first episode starts with the main character Coop Burtonburger, his dad Burt Burtonburger, and his little sister Millie Burtonburger playing catchig game with a ball. This is when Coop meets Mr. Kat. When Coop looks at the cat, he understands that this cat is an evil cat. But his sister Millie starts liking that cat. She asks her dad too keep Kat in the house.

When dad rejects the request, this happens : Dad says – We have to find it’s owner. To which Millie cires and Dad has to accept her request.

Well yes, I too think Millie is Shinzo’s rebirth. Well after all this, Burtonburger’s dangerous neighbor Old Lady Munson is introduced. Man, how can anyone forget her? Also, Coop’s best friend Dennis and two great filmmakers are introduced. Well, as the show goes on new characters like Fiona is introduced, who was first introduced in Season 2 Episode 1.

And as you may know that Fiona and Coop have a crush on each other since their first meet. Phoebe – What do we say about this madam. She has a huge crush on Coop and enjoys surprising him by sneaking up on him on many occasions and not respecting Coop’s personal space or feelings.

Mr. Cheeks – He is not only a speaking Hamster, but also the best rival of Kat. In short, Mr. Kat is an alien who is sent to Earth so that he can rule it. But Coop and Dennis come to know about Kat’s intentions. This is why, in this whole series they try their best to fail Kat’s tricks. Overall this show was full of Science fiction stuffs and full of fun.

Also, by watching this show many people have a feeling of watching Tom and Jerry. But what is the creation story of this great show? Let’s find out.

Kid Vs Kat – The Backstory

This is Helifax, beautiful place situated in Canada. In the year 1971, was born the Creator of Kid vs Kat Rob Boutilier, whose full name is Robert Boutilier. In his school time, Robert was known for his drawing skills and why won’t he be known. As he published so many cartoons and carricatures in his School Newspaper and Yearbooks.

At the age of 25, that is year 1997, he completed his 1 year Animation Course From Vancouver Film School, and started his career as a storyboard artist.

Quick Fact – Rob Boutilier did’t had any thought of going to Animation Field because he himself said –

All I ever wanted to do a daily comic strip I got sidelined to Animation because I thought It would be good discipline

Robert Boutilier

It all means, he only liked making comics and he wanted to make career in making them. But, due to the Industry Demand of that time, he thought of entering Animation Field and thus he became a Storyboard Artist. In the form of Storyboard Artist, he did his first job in AKA Cartoon Animation Studio. During this job, he created the storyboards of Cartoon Network’s Very Popular show – Ed Edd and Eddy.

After working for 3 years in AKA Cartoon Company, later he worked in many Production Companies as a storyboard artist. And during this, year 2003, he thought character designs for his own animation. Rob says, after 8 years of marriage, My wife and I bought hairless cat. And I was always amazed by people’s reactions because people said – Hey this cat looks like an alien.

I thought myself, if this cat was actually an alien, she would have done something evil to me. And whatever she would have done all that this Kat did to this Kid.

Now a quick fact – Sphynx cat, found in Canada, are a breed of cat that have low fur on skin. Which means they have usually hairless skin. And Rob Boutilier bought a cat of this breed as a pet. On the base of which, Animated Kat came into existence.

Well another interesting fact – Look at this picture. There are two cats of Sphynx and Devon Rex breeds. These two are Robert’s cats. And Rob says I have two cats at my home. One is a hairless Sphynx and the other is a short haired breed called a Devon Rex. Both are the inspirations for Mr. Kat.

Year 2004, Robert started his job in Studio B Productions as a Storyboard Supervisor. Here he worked for Class of the Titans and Ricky Sprocket. And while working on Studio B, he shared his own cat animation story with his colleagues and even Studio B Owner. And guess what, everyone liked the story very much.

But it doesn’t matter how much the studio liked it, But what matters is how much a Kids Channel will like it. And to know that first Robert Boutilier needed to get attention from any Kids Channel. And for that attention, Robert took the support of Mipcom Junior Event

Now what’s this Mipcom Junior Event? Let’s know. Mipcom is an annual event dedicated towards Television Industry for Production Studios and Broadcasters. For them this event works as a marketplace where they can buy or sell a new TV Program. Usually, this program is held in October yearly In Cannes, France.

And Mipcom has a spin off event named Mip Junior where only Children’s TV Programs are bought or sold.

The clip you just saw above, is Kid Vs Kat’s Pilot Episode which Robert Boutilier got ready in 2006. Now this doesn’t look like today’s Kid Vs Kat, right? Why would it even look like that? Because it’s not even Kid Vs Kat. As it is just the very initial concept of Rob Boutilier’s animation show. And firstly he named this show as Look What My Sister Dragged In, in which character design and colorings were totally different from today’s characters.

As you can see Millie’s clothes and specs and Coop’s clothes. Long Story short, with the help of Studio B Productions, Robert created this 3 minutes Pilot Episode. And participated in 2006’s Mip Junior Event where his pilot episode was premiered and was liked by many Broadcasting Companies.The real fun started from here.

In this Event of Mip Junior, Y TV Channel signed a deal with Studio B Productions under which they created a full animated series of Look What My Sister Dragged In. Now did you think why this deal was only between Studio B Productions and Y TV? Let me tell you, This was because Mip Junior Event works as a marketplace between Production Companies Broadcasting Companies, and not between Creators and Broadcasting Companies.

And after this internal deal February 2007, it was publically announced that Studio B Productions had signed Developmental deal with Y TV for a show named Look What My Sister Dragged In. And after a year of this announcement, January 2008, the team of Studio B Productions produced Look What My Sister Dragged In Series.

Now a Quick fact – During its production process, the name of this series was changed from Look What My Sister Dragged In To Kid Vs Kat. The name is known by the whole world today.

By the way, after a month of its production Studio B Productions was bought by Dhx Media. And as I told you in Slugterra Video, Dhx Media bought many Production Companies, changed its name from Dhx To WildBrain and today, WildBrain is the king of Kids and Animation Industry. Because first the rights of Kid Vs Kat were with Studio B Productions, thus after its sale its rights had gone to Dhx Media.

And ultimately Dhx changed its name which meant that the rights were now with WildBrain. In the year April 2008, when Dhx Co. was not named WildBrain, Dhx along with Canadian Channel Y TV sold the rights of broadcasting Kid Vs Kat on Toon Disney Channel to Decode Enterprises Broadcasting Company.

Quick Fact – Later this company was also purchased by Dhx. And finally 25 October 2008 Kid Vs Kat was originally broadcast for the first time on YTV. And in February 2009 it was broadcast on Toon Disney in USA .Honestly, those days Toon Disney had a Jetix Block in USA. And in this Jetix Block was aired Kid Vs Kat Block, which means Toon Disney Channel became Jetix Channel for some time and in that time Jetix aired its shows.

And later when the Toon Disney Channel was rebranded and made Disney XD from that time Kid Vs Kat started airing on Disney XD. After Season 1 of Kid Vs Kat was completed, Dhx announced that the series had been renewed for the second season. And why would they not air it? As in just one year, Kid Vs Kat was very successful in Canada and many International Counties.

Well Season 2 was premiered on 11 September 2010. And in 4 June 2011 its last episode was aired. What happens in its last episode? Plus what is the reason of its discontinuation? I’ll tell you soon. But before that, know this its first season was produced by Studio B Productions. But its second season was produced in Disney XD’s Inhouse Studio.

That is why Kid Vs Kat was telecast Internationally in every country’s Disney XD Channel, including our India and some neighboring countries.

Fun Fact – In parallel to the main series of Kid Vs Kat, two seasons of Kid Vs Kat Digital Shorts were made. These shorts were 2.5 minutes each and were very funny. Because these shorts were not telecast in Indian TV’s, so I’m sure you don’t know about these. But the funny thing is you can watch these shorts on YouTube today.

Kid Vs Kat – The Last Episode

Like every episode, its last Episode 26 was divided into two segments of 11 minutes each. First segment is The Kat Went Back Part 1 and 2. Episdoe starts with Coop and Dennis fighting Kat Mr. Kat opens a teleportation hole so that its Planet’s people, that means army of cats start attacking on Earth. But somehow Coop and his friends shut, I mean, fail the plan of Kat.

And here Kat’s boss gets very angry and threatens to kill him. And when the depressed Kat is about to leave, suddenly a fat cat is sent from Planet Nebula to Earth to accomplish the mission. And now not only just Kat Coop and his friends are also kidnapped and sent to Kat’s Planet. Here everyone comes to know that Mr. Kat is an alien.

And the most shocking thing is that we come to know is Dr. K, Mr. Kat’s love interest has learned human language. And she tells her plan to rule the Earth to Coop and his friends. Long story short, Coop and his friends escape somehow from Kat’s Planet and Mr. Kat is given second chance to rule Planet Earth again. After which Mr. Kat returns to Earth and erases all the memories of Nebula and his secret identity from Coop and his friends.

Except for Dennis and Coop’s memories. And thus at the end of the show the situations become the same as it was in the beginning. Well year 2017 on his birthday, 26 August celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Kid Vs Kat, Rob Boutilier tweeted on Twitter –

At the end Coop and Mr. Kat become great friends.

Kid Vs Kat In India

In India, this show came just after a year of original release in Canada, which was, off course, aired on Disney XD Channel. And its reruns were broadcast for many years. Not exactly sure, but I think it was broadcast for 5-6 years year.s As when I was a kid, I thought Disney Channel is made for Doraemon, Cartoon Network is made for Ben 10, Hungama for Shin Chan and Disney XD for Kick Buttowski and Kid Vs Kat.

Why Kid Vs Kat Was Disonctinued

After two months of the cancellation of Kid Vs Kat, 19 August 2011, Rob Boutilier cleared to his fans that it won’t get any season 3 because show was cancelled by WildBrain by the order of Disney XD. Rob says –

Hey there, thank you for your kind words. I didn’t realize until recently that some fans were waiting for some kind of announcement regarding season three. But I don’t believe there will be another season. The decision is upto Y TV and Disney XD. Kat went back is the finale episode of the series and I’m okay with this ending. In fact we were prepared for it. But some fans weren’t happy with the choices we made in the finale so I thought I’d offer my thoughts on it.

My thanks to everyone who supported Kid Vs Kat, we are nominated for three Gemini Awards this month.

Ultimately Disney XD gave no reasons officially for ending the show. But it’s the fact that Robert could do nothing in it and today you can’t watch this show on TV. But you can watch it on WildBrain’s YouTube Channel. If you haven’t watch it, watch it for sure.

The Learnings

After so much research of Kid Vs Kat’s creator, I can say that, Robert is indeed a funny person. He is always in a chill mood and makes people around him laugh and laughs on his own too. Nowadays he is working on Apple TV Plus’s series The Snoopy Show and also his age is 50 years now.

And here are two take aways for you from this story.

No. 1 – The life path is undefined and unforeseen. Rob Boutiler only like to draw cartoon strips he became storyboard artist according to the situation. And see, he released the show of his own. He would have never thought of this too that I’ll make a story and release an International Hit Kids Show.

Similarly, you can set a target but if you get any new opportunities don’t miss it. Explore everything because who knows you can be successfull by walking on a path you never thought of.

No. 2 – It’s just arround you. Rob Boutilier thought a story based just on his cat and made such a successful show. Yes, if you want to create something of your own you can do it. Just look arround yourself. Who knows you can make a story on a pen, and make a great show like Rob did.
